The Organisation

Two credit management groups started meeting in Auckland in the early 1960s. Creditmen Duns initiated Auckland's Creditmen's Club and Accounts Limited initiated their own credit group. It was this latter group that was the nucleus of the first official organisation. The New Zealand Institute of Credit Management incorporated in 1966. This organisation ceased operating in May 1970. The New Zealand Institute of Management officially adopted Credit Management as a special interest group in October 1972.

The New Zealand Credit and Finance Institute incorporated in 1985 initially with regional branches incorporated separately. In October 1995 the regional incorporations were dissolved to enable a continuation of the original National Body. The NZCFI is recognised as the industry's specialist on all matters relating to credit management. Its advice is sought by Government Bodies and Select Committees for input into changes to the law affecting Company and Insolvency Law Reform and other matters that touch on and affect credit issues.

The valuable role of Credit Management in the NZ economy today and tomorrow

The Credit Manager plays an increasingly valuable role in our economy. While a high level of competency in finance is important, this needs to be balanced with a clear understanding of human nature set within a commercial framework. An experienced and professional Credit Manager plays an important role to ensure that risk is identified and controlled in the overall achievement of business goals. It is the goal of the NZCFI to support its members to achieve this by providing training and resource to help contribute to a healthy economy.
